Artist Statement
I have been taking photographs since I was in high school and volunteered to be one of two staff photographers for the school paper. I knew nothing about photography, and was given some brief instruction on how to operate a camera and enlarger, and left to figure out the art and techniques on my own. I took many bad photos and made a variety of development mistakes while learning the craft. Wanting to explore more than photojournalism, I began taking the school camera home on weekends to conduct photography excursions and try out different techniques. Along the way I earned a couple of honorable mentions in regional photojournalism competitions and first-place in the local Women’s club photography contest. I think some of my photographs still reflect my roots in photojournalism. I’m often attracted to photos that capture unique moments in time or preserve pieces of our rapidly disappearing past. Stylistically I’ve always preferred to explore subjects from unusual angles and call out unique textures in a variety of objects and landscapes. Initially I did this with black and white film; and I’m now working with digital media. Though my recent work is mostly color, I think the black and white photographer in me is often revealed through the mix of light and shadow that makes up a large component of my work. |

Why Clever Gecko?
As it turns out, there is a well known UK photographer that shares my name; and I needed to find some way to differentiate myself in the photography world. So I resurrected a domain name I previously used for my website design and development work. It’s also much easier to spell, say and remember than my given name.
I hope you enjoy the photos.
